The Drizzt series begins its cyclic themes of complex antagonists, artifact possession, post traumatic stress disorder and the slow reveal of the dark elf ranger of Forgotten Realm’s past. A major character, Wulfgar the barbarian, was brought back from the dead in the previous volume. Salvatore uses skillful plotting to create suspense as the hero’s mission to destroy an infernal artifact is derailed by the skillful misdirection of the unlikely anti-hero Jarlaxle Baenre. Also, the author begins to create conflicts within the core group of adventurers so their friendship evolves as much as they battle wizards and monsters.
The traveling companions are split up early as they make their way to be rid of the crystal shard.Wulfgar struggles to recover from the tortures of the Abyss, a man literally back from hell can find no peace among former friends. Surprisingly, he finds a measure of relief in intoxication.We finally get to witness the end of a long time grudge match as Artemis and Drizz't square off.
The Silent Blade is empathy and Wulfgar has lost his, so is on his own path of discovery. Drizzt and companions are on an adventure to Cadderly's home to rid themselves of the crystal shard. Meanwhile, Artemis Enterri returns home finding everything has changed, himself most of all. Jaraxle has plans for both Artemis and Drizzt, bringing about an amazing end to this installment.
Silent Blade, the 11th Drizzt book, begins a fresh new adventure for the Companions of the Hall. As Drizzt and Co. head out to Spirit Soaring to have Cadderly destroy the (same old) Crystal Shard, monsters hound them at every turn. Wulfgar struggles with inner demons until he finds a place as a bouncer for a rough tavern in Luskan, where he has a great time bashing heads and drinking booze. Artemis Entreri travels back to his roots in Calimport to begin reestablishing his name and fortune. Jarlaxle has ventured out of Menzoberanzan in the search for power and wealth and coaxes Entreri to join his plans.The story is fun and exciting in the normal Salvatore style. The many fight scenes are told with unmatched skill and clarity and are interspersed throughout the book so that you never have a dull moment. Character development is the primary thing that stands out in this book. Wulfgar, Entreri, and Jarlaxle especially grow as characters. Drizzt and Catie-Brie continue to slowly develop a somewhat bizarre relationship in which neither really knows what they want. The book ends with most of the characters being at peace with their place in life, but also with a feel of danger on the horizon that makes you look forward to the rest of the series.
I haven't finished this book yet. I am utterly burnt out from Drizzt so I had to put it down (figuratively speaking since it's a digital copy) and will wait for a long while before going back to it. There's a whole lot more books after this one so a couple at a time with months between will help with the burn out I hope because they are really decent books with great inner reflection on friendship and loyalty.

This is the first book by R.A. Salvatore I've read but I'd heard good things about his series featuring the Drow Elf Drizzt Do'Urden. I realize I need to cut the author some slack because it's my own fault for jumping right into the middle of the series but from a technical skill standpoint Salvatore is never going to be mistaken for Tolkien or George R. R. Martin. His writing just doesn't have nearly that level of quality which may be more a product of the amount of material Salvatore produces. He has clearly sacrificed quality for quantity. On the other hand he is a darn sight better than the other mega prolific Dungeons and Dragons writer, Margaret Weis.The book centers around two main storylines. One thread features the series star Drizzt and his crew of disparate humanoids including the inevitable mixture of Dwarf, Gnome and human (thank you Tolkein). His Barbarian bro Wolfgar is suffering from some post traumatic stress following an incredibly lengthy battle with a demon. Meanwhile Drizzt is holding a sentient crystal named Crenshinibon who is calling out to creatures to assist in freeing itself from Drizzt. This leads into the first complaint I have. How can I take seriously an evil artifact whose name constantly reminds me of a high calorie cinnamon roll sold at most airports? I'm also not a fan of the name Drizzt or Catti-brie. Badly named characters seems like a trend with Salvatore.Running in parallel is the other storyline revolving around the assassin Artemis Entreri who appears to be the most talented assassin ever to walk the face of the Earth. Through most of the book this annoyed me since I saw no connection between the two threads and because Entreri was obnoxiously overly talented. Once I discovered that Entreri was Drizzt nemesis it finally made sense and I accepted the logic in building him up as a super skilled killer. In the language of D&D all the characters in this book would be considered very high level which I felt hurt the drama. At one point Drizzt and crew find themselves being tracked by a giant who is unable to resist the powerful siren song of Cinnabon. His reward is a quick and bloody end that bordered on cruel. In another part of the book Wulfgar becomes a bouncer and easily dispatches any and all rowdy customers including a small group of angry soldiers and a giant of a man named Tree Block who goes down without even causing Wulfgar to break a sweat. It all happens far too easy and leaves the book less than compelling.I gave Margaret Weis two chances before giving up on her books and Salvatore deserves at least that. I may have been overly harsh, the book isn't bad but it isn't a classic. Again, I think this is the result when you crank out this much material. George R.R. Martin labors for years on a book and produces incredible works so it's all a tradeoff. It was good enough that I'll give one of Salvatore's three book box sets a try but it's going to be iffy if I continue after that.
I love these adventures of Drizzt! Can't wait to read the next one! I am very grateful to my son for introducing me to this series!
